The tract, in the heart of Broward County, was formerly an active course but now sits vacant. It is owned by Plantation Panther Golf, a company controlled by Fort Lauderdale, FL entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizenga.

The city wants to reclaim the old golf course and develop it into an Audubon-certified golf property, Plantation mayor Rae Carole Armstrong tells GlobeSt.com. The city also wants to build a new $1.5 million to $2 million golf club and develop a park on about 60 acres.

"The primary thrust here is for preservation and environmental purposes," Armstrong tells GlobeSt.com.
