At a city council meeting this week, consultants from Conversion Management Associates showed the results from preliminary studies, recommending that the 14-acre site be zoned for the housing project. The school district owns 11 acres, while the city owns the remaining three acres, which are currently used as baseball fields.
According to city officials, residential housing is considered more beneficial to commercial development because of the current lack of demand for office space. The residential project is expected to provide a profit of at least $700,000 a year to the school district.
JFK University is currently leasing the school site but will be relocating its campus to another area to make room for the project. The school district plans to have secured a developer by the time the university's lease expires. The total development cost has not yet been determined.
