A 250,000-sf dry grocery warehouse and distribution facility is expected to open by spring 2005. Gerry Heffner, vice president of Schuylkill Econonic Development Co., Pottsville, tells GlobeSt.com, "total build-out, phase three, calls for a total of 1 million sf. They (Wegmans) are planning a facility that duplicates existing capabilities in Rochester in order to serve the company's expanding presence south (of Rochester)."

The third-phase facility will include manufacturing capabilities, such as baking and meat processing, Heffner says. No date is set for its construction.

The state provided a $3.8-million finance package of grants and tax credits.

Wegmans has of 64 grocery stores in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. The newest of the 10 in Pennsylvania opened in Allentown last month.

Lee Fein, senior industrial specialist at Allentown, PA-based Colliers L & A, assisted Wegmans in locating the site.
