CHICAGO-The Greater Chicago Food Depository has broken ground on a 215,000-sf food bank and training center, which will enable it to double its capacity to distribute food to the Chicago area’s needy families. Plans call for the new facility, which is expected to open about one year from now, to have the capacity to distribute up to 80 million pounds of food annually.

The depository currently is at 4501 S. Tripp Ave. on the city’s Southwest Side. The new facility, which is being built by Opus North, will be at West 42nd Street and South Karlov Ave. Opus is design/builder for the build-to-suit office/warehouse facility, with A. Epstein & Sons International providing architectural and engineering services. The exterior will be constructed of precast concrete with an aluminum-framed, green-tinted window system.
