This week's two-hour meeting of the board's Rules and Audits Committee led to a 2-1 vote in favor of Bill Lee, according to a committee clerk. Mayor Willie Brown proposed Lee, who is currently the City Administrator, for the planning commission after months of disputes over other candidates.
Supervisor Matt Gonzalez voted against Lee on the committee, according to the clerk. Now the matter must go to the full board on Monday.
Until this spring, the mayor appointed all seven commissioners. However, with Measure D's passage, the supervisors won the authority to name three and also to accept or reject the mayor's four picks. Then in June, with at least one of those four in doubt for approval, Brown yanked all his nominees and the Planning Commission was left with too few members for a quorum.
Within recent weeks, three out of four of Brown's second slate were endorsed by the board and were later sworn in. They are as follows: The Rev. Edgar Boyd, pastor of Bethel AME Church; Shelley Bradford Bell, director of the Bayview Opera House; and Michael Antonini, a dentist who is active in the West of Twin Peaks community.
Lee's acceptance, which at least some people around City Hall predict, would end the standoff that led to emergency hearings before Planning Director Gerald Green this fall.
Bill Lee would join the mayor's other choices along with the board's three selections -- planning consultant Marilyn Sue Lee, affordable housing consultant Lisa Feldstein, and electricians' labor administrator Kevin Hughes.
Whether with six or seven members, Green said this week he expects the newly constituted Planning Commission to start meeting next month.
