Atlanta-based Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates walked off with two Awards of Excellence and a Merit Award. Right behind was locally based Surber, Barber, Choate & Hertlein Architects Inc. with two Awards of Excellence.
Thompson Ventulett was cited for the interior design of WestWayne, an advertising agency at 1170 Peachtree St. N.E. Steven W. Clem is the firm's principal handling the project.
The firm also won an Award of Excellence for designing the Merrill Lynch campus in Hopewell, NJ. Michael Ezell was the principal in charge. Thompson Ventulett's Merit Award was for the interior design of Carter's (children's clothing) corporate office. Principal: Steven W. Clem.
Surber Barber's two Awards of Excellence were for Copenhill Lofts at 850 Ralph McGill Blvd. (principal, Dennis Hertlein); and horse stables and an artist's studio in Seattle (principal, James Choate III).
Other Awards of Excellent recipients were Scogin Elam & Bray Architects Inc. for the Herman Miller Cherokee Operations, a factory in Canton, GA (Mack Scogin, principal); Smith Dalia & Associates for Freedom Lofts, 821 Ralph McGill Blvd. (Tom Dalia, principal); and Heery International for the School of Architecture, Southern Polytechnic State University, 100 S. Marietta Parkway, Marietta, GA (Gordon Smith, principal).
Merit Award winters were Cooper Carry Inc. for the Emory University Mathematics and Science Center (Pope Bullock, principal); Daniel E. Snyder, Architect, Savannah, for the historic renovation of Tybee Island Lighthouse head keeper's cottage (principal, Daniel E. Snyder); William Carpenter for Reynoldstown Gateway Park; Brock Green & Associates for MidCity Lofts, 845 Spring St. (Eric Brock, principal); Plexus R&D for La Villa office building, Jacksonville, GA (Erik Lewitt, principal); and Perkins & Will for Whitefield Academy in Mableton, GA (Barbara Crum, principal).
Boston architect Graham Gund chaired the AIA selection jury which studied 100 competition entries.
