SAN JOSE-The San Jose City Council this week voted to begin condemnation proceedings against two properties adjacent to the Tropicana shopping center in East San Jose. The council voted unanimously to use its eminent domain authority on the property located at 1708 and 1720 Story Rd., in part because there was no opposition from the property owner.

Just down the street, however, the owners of 1848 Story Rd. oppose being forced to sell their property to the city. The council agreed to give city officials an additional 30 days to negotiate with those owners after some strong words were exchanged between City Councilman Forrest Williams and Mayor Ron Gonzales. “Mayor you may not like that but people are concerned about our use of eminent domain,” Williams said.

The city’s Redevelopment Agency wants to acquire the entire Tropicana shopping center and have it redeveloped by a single developer. “We have entered into a development agreement for the entire shopping center, not just a portion,” Redevelopment Agency Director Susan Shick says.
