Casual Male to Open 40 New Stores

CANTON, MA-Casual Male Big & Tall retail chain is planning to open 40 stores across the country over the next 18 months. Needham, MA-based Designs Inc. acquired the locally based Casual Male Corp., which has been renamed Casual Male Retail Group, out of bankruptcy this past May for $170 million.

At its height, Casual Male had over 606 stores. Casual Male currently has 474 stores in 44 states across the country. Jeff Ungar, director of investor relations for Casual Male, acknowledges that the former owners of the company had been closing stores in an effort to salvage the company, but he emphasizes that the company is “under new management” now. He adds that it has not yet been determined where the new stores will be located. A standard size Casual Male store is 3,500 sf.
