The management firms are San Francisco-based Artisan Partners, which manages a $609-million international equity portfolio; Newport Pacific Management, which manages $175 million in international equities for the pension fund, and; AXA Rosenbergin Orinda, which manages a $671 million portfolio on behalf of CalPERS.

Additionally, CalPERS has approved a $400 million allocation to Arrowstreet Capital, L.P., a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based international equity manager. According to CalPERS, the firm was given $100 million in May 2000 as part of the CalPERS' Manager Development Program. Over the last two years, Arrowstreet has "outperformed its benchmarks in a difficult equity market".
