The city will consider proposals for affordable housing on the site, which is located on Evans Lane. VTA officials say the property is one of six parcels previously earmarked for commuter parking along the VTA light-rail line.

The VTA is using that income and then some to purchase 15 miles of former Western Pacific Railroad right-of-way for $80 million. VTA purchased a line that runs from Williams St in San Jose north to Paseo Padre Pkwy in Fremont from Union Pacific Corp.

The agreement deal gives VTA a one-year option to buy an additional three miles of track near its new line. VTA plans to its the right-of-way to support the planned extension of the BART from Fremont into San Jose.
