12/24/02: One interesting aspect of this recession has been its impact on some of the biggest players in the capital markets. This year, three major companies have been delisted from the NYSE: Enron, MCI, and Kmart. The first two had less to do with the economy and more to do with financial misdeeds. Kmart, however, a mainstay of American commerce, is harder to overlook. Although it had already filed for bankruptcy, it's tough to fathom Kmart being delisted after 84 years on the Big Board. This company helped usher in the era of one-stop shopping with marketing tactics such as the "Blue Light Special." Let's hope its current bankruptcy plan works out and we can hear another round of, "Attention, Kmart shoppers..." This will bode well both for its employees and the market as a whole.
