Royce Lacey of NAI Commercial Industrial Properties was the outstanding tenant representative and David Sheldon of Atlantis Properties was the outstanding building owner rep.
David Hemphill, the chapter's 2002 president, said Lacey and Sheldon were chosen by a vote of 220 members. The awards weren't for the most deals nor the biggest deals, but for "the guy that did the best job when you're out there showing property. The guy you want to deal with," Hemphill says.
Lacey, a vice president with NAI CIP, has been with the company since 1980 and specializes in industrial properties. His clients have included Apple Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Applied Materials Inc. and Motorola Inc. He was an electrical engineer before joining NAI CIP.
Sheldon had been with Endeavor Real Estate Group before starting his own firm, Atlantis Properties, in September. The company is the marketing agent for Houston-based Weingarten Realty's Austin properties.
Hemphill says the down market makes leasing brokers on both sides of the deal more important. Tenants need someone they can trust to help sort through the numerous options and building owners need someone to bring prospects into their properties. He says CLBA hopes that by recognizing Lacey and Sheldon, it will raise the bar for professionalism--courtesy, thoroughness and timeliness--among Austin brokers.
