The 61,000-sf theater is scheduled to reopen in 2004. According to city officials, the theater, which is located on South First Street, will change the size and scope of Opera San Jose's performances, as well as create a new venue for film festivals and smaller theater productions.

The expensive renovation project is being funded by approximately $21 million from the Packard Humanities Institute and more than $52 million from the city's redevelopment agency. The project was budgeted by the city at about $65 million.

The new theater is being built by contractor Swinerton Builders and managed by construction manager Rudolph & Sletten.
