Historic Fox California Theatre in Renovation

SAN JOSE-The historic Fox California Theatre, which has been closed for three decades, will reopen in 2004 after a $73.4-million renovation is completed. The city's redevelopment agency contributes $52 million while approximately $21 million comes from the Packard Humanities Institute.

SAN JOSE-After 30 years of being closed, the remodeled Fox California Theatre is undergoing a $73.4-million facelift, which will bring the grand movie house back to the city. The 1927 movie theater’s renovation project includes a new decorative vaulted ceiling, a large stage for grand performances, and lifts to raise and lower the orchestra pit.

The 61,000-sf theater is scheduled to reopen in 2004. According to city officials, the theater, which is located on South First Street, will change the size and scope of Opera San Jose’s performances, as well as create a new venue for film festivals and smaller theater productions.
