Temple Shutters 538-Bed Nursing Home

PHILADELPHIA-This is the third nursing home the university health system has closed within a year. The North Philadelphia facility is reportedly losing $1 million a month. A sale to an unidentified Chicago buyer fell through at the last minute.

PHILADELPHIA-The locally based Temple University Health System will close its 538-bed continuing care nursing home at 5301 Old York Rd. in the Olney section of North Philadelphia Jan. 31. It is the third nursing home to be closed by Temple within a year.

Temple acquired the facility, formerly called the Philadelphia Geriatric Center, in 1999. Last year, Temple closed Northwood Nursing and Convalescent Center on Castor Avenue. Two months later, it also shuttered the Elmira Jeffries Memorial Home in North Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Nursing Home, which is affiliated with the Temple system and operated by Episcopal Hospital, remains open.
