SACRAMENTO-The California Department of Food and Agriculture is renovating its main office building here, which has created a stir among state employees who will be relocated during the project. The department will spend approximately $20 million to vacate and renovate its 76-year-old, 50,000-sf building at 1220 N St.
The project will be funded through state bonds and will require the main building to be empty for 18 months.
The department plans to spend thousands of dollars to relocate top executives to CDFA's four-story annex, located directly behind the main office building.
This move will displace the annex's 150 lower-level employees who will be moved to a different Downtown site.
Opponents of the renovation project, including the lower-level employees, say the renovation project is an unnecessary expense at an inopportune time, as the state currently faces a $30-billion deficit. It would be less expensive to keep the lower-level employees at the annex and move the top executives to another location. However, state officials say it is a priority to keep the executive and administrative staffs close to the Capitol.
CDFA has requested approval from the department of finance on leases for offices at Downtown Plaza for the soon-to-be displaced employees of the annex.
While the estimated cost of this relocation was not available, sources say it could cost up to $900,000 for the double move. If the state decides to move executives to a different location and keep the annex as it is, the cost would be half the price. If the department of finance approves this plan, the relocation will begin next month.
