Coghill says the way forward for landowners lies in intelligent use of grants and the important new market of renewable energy. "There is little doubt that British farming needs reform and in many ways the CAP has protected the inefficient," he said.
Ben Crossman of FPDSavills in Wimborne, Dorset, points to telecommunications masts as a possible future source of income. "The construction of new masts is in a lull mainly due to financial difficulties in the industry and the urban bias 3G roll-out," he said, but added: "Over time there will need to be more rural sites and as masts can provide rental levels from £3,500 ($5,400) upwards, landowners should consider registering their properties as potential sites with the operators."
