OLYMPIA, WA-Secretary of State Sam Reed has certified the vote on Referendum 53, the Business Industry Association of Washington-backed initiative that repealed last year’s overhaul of the state’s unemployment insurance program.

The measure comes after the state Supreme Court lifted an injunction that prohibited the Secretary of State’s Office from certifying or canvassing the results.

The measure overturned House Bill 2901, which the BIAW says lowered unemployment tax rates for Boeing by $16 million over the next three years, while increasing tax rates on homebuilders and small businesses by $30 million. Homebuilders, however, traditionally cost the state more than they pay in to the system.
