WASHINGTON, DC-The $46-million completion project for the much-celebrated 317-unit Kennedy-Warren Apartment Building on Connecticut Avenue has gotten under way, although nary a single admirer or passerby could have spotted evidence that the 1930s-era structure is incomplete. Joseph Younger originally designed the Kennedy-Warren. The remaining one-third of the apartment building, which accounts for 114 additional apartment homes, has been designed by Hartman-Cox Architects of Washington, DC and consists of a nine-story, 156,000-sf wing on the east side of the property. Working on behalf of Kennedy-Warren owner the Klingle Corp. Inc., BF Saul Property Co. is serving as the project developer, and The Clark Construction Group Inc.’s Clark Residential is on board as the project’s general contractor.

A towering edifice currently assessed at a value of approximately $25.5 million, the building represents one of the District’s best and most important examples of Art Deco architecture. Yet it was this tumultuous period–which was marred by the Great Depression–that caused a halt to the building’s development, leaving the Kennedy-Warren only two-thirds complete. Now, after a seven-decade delay, the apartment is finally on the road to full completion.
