John Sterik, who left the Portland office for Dallas in 2001 to become COO of TCC's Global Services Group, was asked to head the search for a new city leader after Nelson left. When Sackett followed, Sterik convinced Otis to return after a year with Robert Evans Co.

"He stepped up in terms of leadership," Sterik tells GlobeSt.com. "The promotion is well deserved and well warranted." At the same time, Sterik also announced the promotions of broker Mike Nye to vice president; Marc Strabic to senior associate and Jierre Hotchkiss of Raven Construction (A TCC sister operation) to project manager.

Meantime, the search for a new city leader continues, says Sterik, who has since watched as two more of his hires, Craig Sweitzer and Dan Bozich, leave the company to establish their own firm. "We were going to have to get our cost structure in order for the volume of business we had," says Sterik. "When people left we didn't have to eliminate positions."

The position of managing director, or "city leader," as Sterik calls it, will definitely be filled. Sterik says he's been through a pretty extensive list of people who he knows outside the company and people internally that have been recommended. After more than one internal candidates chose not to move to Portland, Sterik says, he talked to "a double-digit number" of people and has narrowed it down to "two or three real good ones."

"It's my top priority," says Sterik. "But I hesitate to put a deadline on it because it's more important to get the right person."
