180,000-SF Macy's On the Way

WHEATON, MD-A new two-story, 180,000-sf Macy’s department store has been designated to serve as the fourth anchor in the Westfield Shoppingtown Wheaton shopping center. Cincinnati, OH-based owner of the Macy’s chain, Federated Department Stores Inc., expects to begin construction on the outlet next year in an effort to complete the project in 2005. “Macy’s is committed to our Washington DC area customers by providing quality merchandise, personal service and an exciting shopping experience,” says Macy’s East chairman Harold D. Plans for the store’s development have been a long in coming. Back in March of last year members of the Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board discussed the stalled plans. “Negotiations with Macy’s were set back when Montgomery Ward’s closed,” remarks Ricardo McCrimmon.” Macy’s put discussions on hold until Westfield had a replacement store. They seemed very satisfied with Target. Unfortunately, 9/11 happened and all studies were put on hold to see what the long term implications are.”
