1/9/03: The big news last week was Jones Lang LaSalle's cutting of 4% of its workforce (300 people). Things are not easy on the corporate advisory/services business these days. Deal flow has certainly slowed, and defining so-called non-essential human assets has become easier. In addition, the rumor mill has been rampant regarding which of the publicly owned services firms will merge. However, instead of looking for the story behind the story, we should look at the story beyond the story. In other words, what will the landscape look like three, five, seven years down the road? As we see more consolidation and additional employee frustration under new corporate structures, the entrepreneur is poised for a comeback. The small shop with four or five top dealmakers will most likely return, building newer brands over time. Think about it: Barnes & Noble was once just a small bookstore in New York and Starbucks was just a coffee shop in Seattle. It's exciting to think who the new players will be. As we speak, the seeds are being sown.
