Fairfax County Continues to Attract Businesses

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA-Officials with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority have assessed their successes in 2002 and have marked it a banner year, recently reporting the relocation or expansion of 112 companies and the addition of 6,100 new jobs in the county over the last 12 months. “In 2002 Fairfax County surpassed the 100-million sf mark in commercial office space,” FCEDA’s Alan Fogg tells GlobeSt.com. Fairfax County has entered the new year secure in its position as the largest commercial office market in the Metropolitan Washington, DC region.

“Our proximity to Washington, DC, makes this a natural fit for federal agencies and companies that are expanding to handle defense, intelligence and homeland security projects for the government,” FCEDA president and CEO Gerald L. Gordon says of the news. Most of the expansions and relocations involve information technology-related businesses. Just to name a few, in Reston, BAE Systems North America opened a new 135,000-sf, $51.6 million complex last October, while Microsoft opened its $25 million, 63,000-sf Innovation & Technology Conference Center in September.
