The property is at 300 N. Lamar Blvd., the street that is the usual western boundary of the CBD. The building, which started out as a bakery, has 47,000 sf.

"We've carved it up as much as we possibly can," says Gerald Davis, president and CEO of the organization. "But, our business has grown so much as an organization that we are really out of usable space."

To its north are retail centers housing small shops. Up a block and across the street, Whole Foods Market Inc.'s 80,000-sf store and seven-story office building are to rise. To the east are a Post Properties apartment complex and CLB Partners' 82-unit Austin City Lofts project.

"The expansion continues to drive outward from the center of town and I think we're just in the latest, greatest ring," Davis says. "The cranes are getting closer to us and to I-35."The Goodwill property has attracted unsolicited interest in the past. "There were lots of people approaching me in '99 and 2000," Davis tells GlobeSt.com. "There haven't been as many people (since then), but I would still say at least once a month."

Jay Lamy in the Austin office of Staubach Co. is handling the real estate issues for Goodwill. He says apartment, office and retail developers have expressed interest in the property. A minimum bid amount hasn't been set. Because Goodwill is non-profit, its property is not taxed and therefore it doesn't have an assessed market value set by the Travis Central Appraisal District.

Davis says Goodwill has several sites that he calls hot prospects under consideration for its new location, which could range from 50,000 sf to 100,000 sf. The facility would house a headquarters staff, retail operation and transportation center.

Goodwill provides job training for people with disabilities and those returning to the work force. It serves a 15-county region including Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. Davis says Goodwill is the second biggest non-profit organization in Austin behind Seton Healthcare Network. Sealed bids on the property are due by Feb. 28.
