The site is includes a shuttered 55-year old, 116,000-sf candy manufacturing plant that will be demolished to make way for the new development.

The plant was originally built in 1947 by the Walter H. Johnson Candy Co. In the 1970s, the property was acquired by Peter Paul Foods and in 1981 was sold again to Farley Candy Co. Subsequently; Favorite Brands acquired the site, then Nabisco and finally Kraft Foods. The plant over the years has made Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, as well as bulk candy corn, malted milk balls, nut confections and various other chocolate confections.

Michael J. Horne, president, HSS Partners LLC, represented the seller, a private corporation. According to Horne, "the present owner acquired the property in 2000, when the property was subject to a long-term lease with Nabisco. As part of Kraft's purchase of Nabisco, an early termination of the lease was negotiated and the plant was closed by Kraft in the fall of 2001."

Asking price for the site was $6 million. This represents the second major new construction residential community in the Kilbourn Park neighborhood in more than a decade. A 109-unit senior housing development known as Belmont Senior Village Apartments was built at 4629-4653 and 4701-05 W. Belmont Ave.
