Mounds of Memories to be Overturned for New Townhomes

CHICAGO-Dubin Residential, a developer of condominiums and townhomes in the city of Chicago, has purchased an approximate four-acre site of a former candy factory on the northwest side for a new townhome development.

CHICAGO-Dubin Residential has purchased a 3.94-acre site at 4500 W. Belmont Ave. on the city’s northwest side for a new townhome development. To be known as Kilbourn Court, the property was recently rezoned from M-1-1 to R-4. Plans call for a $30 million, 116-unit development.

The site is includes a shuttered 55-year old, 116,000-sf candy manufacturing plant that will be demolished to make way for the new development.

The plant was originally built in 1947 by the Walter H. Johnson Candy Co. In the 1970s, the property was acquired by Peter Paul Foods and in 1981 was sold again to Farley Candy Co. Subsequently; Favorite Brands acquired the site, then Nabisco and finally Kraft Foods. The plant over the years has made Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, as well as bulk candy corn, malted milk balls, nut confections and various other chocolate confections.
