1/23/03: How does a company attain and retain talent? Some industry leaders believe that the current trend of paying upfront signing bonuses to attract new talent has gotten out of hand. This was one of the topics this week at Real Estate Outlook 2003, produced by the Real Estate Conference Group and held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. There, a panel of industry heavyweights that included Barry Barovick, president and CEO of Grubb & Ellis; John Cushman, chairman of Cushman & Wakefield; Harvey Green, president and CEO of Marcus and Millichap; Lewis C. Horne, executive managing director of CB Richard Ellis' greater Los Angeles region; and Steve Seigel, chairman and CEO of Insignia/ESG discussed this very topic. In Cushman's view, this is not the way to take on or keep new talent. He told the audience of more than 1,000 that Cushman & Wakefield does not pay for new hires. Maybe these are words to live by. Eventually the market will rebound and the competition for top performers will heat up. Playing the field for big earners may be considered the cost of doing business. But, you must ask yourself, what is the price?
