2/6/03: The unemployment rate for New York City hit 8.4% in December, rising from 8% the month before. This is called “trending upward,” but upward is clearly the wrong direction. Many of the unemployed making up that new 0.4% come from the ranks of the financial/investment-banking community. In other words, our capital markets are far from recovering. The President believes that the stimulus package introduced last week is just the ticket to get our economy humming again. Really? I still haven’t spoken to anyone in any part of the country that truly believes it will. Of course, the opposing party hasn’t presented anything better. The 2004 elections are just around the corner, and there is hope that those running for office will actually ask for our opinions again. Until then, hang on; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
