Baltimore Medical Makes Move Toward $42M Expansion

BALTIMORE-The Greater Baltimore Medical Center has revealed its plans to make way for the growing population in need of emergency care through a $42-million expansion and upgrade procedure. The hospital will add a new 90,000-sf structure and it will renovate 75,000 sf of existing space. In addition to accommodating greater demands for emergency services, GBMC is using the upgrade to reposition itself to compete with the nearly 50 acute care facilities in the area. “Our goal,” hospital officials say, “is a state-of-the-art emergency department with service unparalleled by any other hospital in Baltimore, and reduced wait-times.”

The project is scheduled to wrap up next spring. Upon completion of the endeavor, GBMC will have supplemented its emergency department with the addition of a three-story building to accommodate the Rapid Diagnostic Unit, a five-bed pediatric care facility, 12 adult patient care bays, and four surgical suites. A medical intensive care unit and a community resource center will also be housed in the new structure.
