WASHINGTON, DC-The US General Service Administration’s longstanding, multi-million-dollar plans for the redevelopment of the Southeast Federal Center have moved forward with the federal real estate department’s recent selection of five developers to submit a Request for Proposals for the 44-acre mixed-use project. Upon completion, the waterfront locale will consist of about 300,000 sf of retail space, a 1.3 million-sf complex to house the US Department of Transportation, and about 1 million sf of residential housing, public facilities, and additional office space.

“This project represents an entirely new approach for GSA,” says the organization’s National Capitol Region regional administrator Donald C. Williams. “Thanks to passage of the Southeast Federal Center Public/Private Development Act of 2000, GSA has an unprecedented opportunity to partner with the private sector for the development of a prime site.” The formerly gated-off facility will be converted to a neighborhood of sorts, where work, home and recreational worlds coexist.
