The 50,000-sf Sam and Ann Barshop Center for Longevity and Aging Studies gets going with a groundbreaking Thursday. The Barshops donated $4 million for the center, which will house a program that brings together top-notch researchers. US Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn are expected to attend the groundbreaking.

The project, which is expected to be ready in November 2004, has more than 150 faculty members engaged in aging research ranging from molecular biology to the management of health care.

Sam Barshop is the founder of the LaQuinta hotel chain and a San Antonio-based developer. He started Barshop & Oles, which develops shopping centers in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and is the firm's chairman. He's also a former member of the University of Texas System board of regents.

Other funding for the center came from the Houston-based Brown Foundation, which donated $6 million; the state's Permanent University Fund, which contributed $6 million; and the National Institutes of Health, which provided a $3-million facilities grant.

The building will be situated at the Texas Research Park at 14814 Omicron Dr., a 1,200-acre development west of San Antonio. The Barshop Center will be the health science center's third facility in the park, which also is home to other public and private science- and health-related research operations.

San Antonio-based Bartlett Cocke LP is the general contractor for the Barshop Center. The Kell Munoz architectural firm, also based in San Antonio, designed the project.
