The award, created in Pollack's honor, was presented by William R. Nelson, president of the chamber's board of directors, at the organization's annual awards luncheon, attended by more than 400 business and civic leaders.

The honor recognized Pollack's work on the 5340 W. Glendale Ave. strip mall, once a hangout for vagrants, which was transformed last year. The plaza, which stood vacant for decades, is now a thriving shopping center anchored by one of the nation's hottest retailers, a 99 Cents Only store.

Pollack also was honored several years ago with a separate award for the redevelopment of Glenfair Plaza, a shopping center located at 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. In addition to revitalizing those two plazas, Pollack has redeveloped more than a half dozen shopping centers in Glendale and another 2.5 million sf of commercial real estate space throughout the greater Phoenix region.

Pollack, known as the "plastic surgeon of real estate" for his ability to revitalize dying retail outlets, is founder and president of Mesa-based Michael A. Pollack Real Estate Investments.
