The acquisition, which has become the city's newest addition to Mission Trails Regional Park, has been purchased by the Zoological Society of San Diego from San Diego State University. The Zoological Society bought it to fulfill the biological mitigation requirements associated with the expansion of the San Diego Wild Animal Park. In addition to the land, the Zoological Society has also given an endowment of $69,000 to the City Park and Recreation Department for management of trails and habitat.
"This land is now part of the Multiple Species Conservation Program and is protected from development," says Mayor Dick Murphy. The newly acquired parcel contains 175 acres of coastal sage scrub, 82 acres of chaparral and various sensitive species such as the California gnatcatcher.
