"Experts are most concerned about buildings with extensive, unsupported roof spans," the mayor's office notes in a release. "Of particular concern are buildings such as retail stores, shopping malls, gymnasiums, auditoriums, and other light canopies such as are typically found at gas stations." City inspectors are starting the District-wide assessment by checking larger properties including shopping centers and supermarkets.
