WASHINGTON, DC-After a week of near record-breaking snowfall and heavy rains that caused roof collapses and the like at several properties–such as the ceiling collapse at a Maryland Toys R Us store over the weekend–District leaders have decided that buildings in the city and surrounding areas need a structural once-over. Mayor Anthony A. Williams has called on Washington, DC property management officials to evaluate the structural integrity of city-owned and leased buildings. He is also encouraging private property owners to do the same.

“Experts are most concerned about buildings with extensive, unsupported roof spans,” the mayor’s office notes in a release. “Of particular concern are buildings such as retail stores, shopping malls, gymnasiums, auditoriums, and other light canopies such as are typically found at gas stations.” City inspectors are starting the District-wide assessment by checking larger properties including shopping centers and supermarkets.
