The Bremerton City Council on Wednesday voted to approve the city's $7.5 million portion of the 100,000-sf project. On Monday, Kitsap County commissioners voted to guarantee an $18 million construction bond issue.

The government center will house offices for the City of Bremerton and Kitsap County. Many of the county employees would move from nearby Port Orchard.

The project has been in the works for some three years now. A ceremonious groundbreaking is expected sometime in mid-March.

Meanwhile, another Downtown revitalization effort is underway. In partnership with the city, Opus Northwest and LMN Architects are developing a $46-million mixed-use development at the corner of First Street and Washington Avenue.

The 15,000-sf conference center will occupy the first floor of a three-story office building facing the ferry terminal. Kitsap Transit will occupy a similar amount of space on the second floor.

Adjacent that office building will be a $10-million, 110-room hotel by Marriott that will include a $1.5-million eating establishment by Anthony's Restaurants. A 58-unit apartment building and a three-floor parking garage for 600 vehicles are also part of the multi-phase project. The project is scheduled for completion in 2004.
