2/26/03: According to the New York City-based business research group, the Conference Board, consumer confidence is at its lowest level since October 1993. Since consumer spending makes up two-thirds of the gross domestic product, this lack of confidence is not a very good sign. Two of the biggest factors contributing to this crisis of confidence are a lackluster job market and the lingering threat of war. Interestingly enough, one of the strongest job markets in the country is in the Metro Washington, DC area. The nation suffers a 6% unemployment rate while the nation's capital is hovering around the 3.5% range. Most of this employment comes from the federal government through its own hiring and spending. Who said the era of big government is dead? This of course may not be a bad thing, given the times. At least those with jobs have confidence.

McGrail
