The chain's Rte. 1 store here will be expanded from 35,000 sf to 57,000 sf. The addition, which will be built along the front and side of the store, will double the size of the produce department. Upgrades and expansions to several other departments are also planned. Completion is slated for late spring/early summer.

"We have been working for several years on this expansion project ," says Shaw's president and CEO Paul T. Gannon, "and it is truly exciting to finally see it become a reality."

The company will replace its 45,000-sf store at Merrymeeting Plaza on Rte. 24 in Brunswick with a 69,000-sf facility in the same center. The new store will replicate many of the Bath store's upgrades and is expected to open sometime next year. The 150,000-sf retail asset is owned by S.R. Weiner & Associates.

Gannon says the rural Wiscasset area provides "additional growth opportunities for Shaw's" as one of the 18 Ames stores the Company acquired this past year. Such locations, he notes, offer new horizons for Shaw's as we continue to reach out to attract additional customers while maintaining our strong relationships with our existing shoppers." The new 43,000-sf store there is expected to open by year's end.

West Bridgewater, MA-based Shaw's manages 185 Shaw's and Star Market stores and two distribution centers throughout New England. Total sales for the last fiscal year were $4.4 billion.
