USF Bestway, a regional shipper unit of US Freightways Corp., needed the bigger space to accommodate its growth in the Austin area, Gary Beggs, USF Bestway president, said in a statement.
The new 24-door terminal increases the company's capacity by 200%, according to the company. It will serve customers in a 60-mile radius around Austin.
The vacancy rate for warehouse space in the east submarket was 18% at the end of 2002, according to a report from NAI Commercial Industrial Properties Co. in Austin. The submarket had a negative absorption of more than 145,000 sf in 2002, about 12% of the total market's negative absorption.
