The EDD research, which lists preliminary labor force statistics for January of this year, shows that the county's unemployment rate rose slightly from December of 2002 to January of 2003. After dropping steadily at the end of last year, from 4.6% in October to 4.5% in November and 4.2% in December, unemployment creeped up again to 4.4% in January of this year.
However, San Diego does continue to hold onto its ranking as number four statewide, which means that only three other regions in California--Marin, San Luis Obispo and Orange counties--have lower levels of unemployment.
According to the EDD, San Diego's January labor force consisted of 1,483,300 people, which reflects an increase from December, when 1,478,900 people comprised the labor force. The EDD research also reports that 1,418,700 workers were employed and 64,600 were out of work in January.
Despite the slight rise in unemployment, San Diego once again beat out the statewide average, according to the EDD report. The state's overall unemployment level was 7% for the month of January, which is more than two whole percentage points higher than San Diego's rate.
