SAN DIEGO-After wrapping up 2002 with a decline in unemployment, joblessness is on the rise again in San Diego County, according to the latest statistics from the State of California Employment Development Department.

The EDD research, which lists preliminary labor force statistics for January of this year, shows that the county’s unemployment rate rose slightly from December of 2002 to January of 2003. After dropping steadily at the end of last year, from 4.6% in October to 4.5% in November and 4.2% in December, unemployment creeped up again to 4.4% in January of this year.

However, San Diego does continue to hold onto its ranking as number four statewide, which means that only three other regions in California–Marin, San Luis Obispo and Orange counties–have lower levels of unemployment.
