The San Diego City Council has given the green light on the purchase, which will cost slightly more than $1.6 million. The city will pay for the land with money from its habitat acquisition fund, which is made up of grants from the State of California and the federal government.
The acquisition will consist of three parcels on Del Mar Mesa encompassing a total of 13.12 acres and a single 10-acre site in East Elliot. All of the 23 acres will be protected from development as part of the city's Multiple Species Conservation Program. This land represents "some of the last pieces of the open space puzzle on the Mesa," says councilman Scott Peters. MSCP staff identified the parcels for acquisition based on their location, habitat content, and appraised value.
