Long-term plans, being developed by the university and the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs, call for complete renovation of the Armory into a convocation center for civic events and a basketball arena for Drexel. The university's ROTC program, a National Guard recruiting station, and an existing museum will remain housed at the Armory.

The agreement gives Drexel the option of taking over the Armory after three years, providing that, during that time, it raises ample funds to fully restore the property. The cost of restoration is estimated to exceed $10 million. Restoration of the Armory is part of the university's ongoing effort to invest a reported $260 million in expansion and upgrading of the more than 50 buildings on its 60-acre campus.

The trapezoidal-shaped, cavernous, 42,000-sf Armory was constructed in 1916. It was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1991.

Nearly five years ago, US Senator Rick Santorum suggested that Drexel and the National Guard discuss ways of preserving the Armory. They formed a team, named "Operation Partnership," which worked out this transition arrangement.

"This development is a win-win situation for Drexel, the National Guard and the City of Philadelphia," said university president Constantine Papadakis. "Drexel is committed to preserving this historic Philadelphia landmark."

Major General William B. Lynch, the state's adjutant general, called the agreement "an exciting partnership that will pay great dividends both to the Pennsylvania State National Guard and Drexel University. We look forward to accommodating Drexel's expanding needs while enhancing this historic armory."
