Kennedy plans to demolish the vacant Fine Arts Cinema, an old cinema on Shattuck Avenue and Haste Street, to make room for a 100-unit apartment building and brand-new 250-seat single-screen theater. Of the 100 units, 20% will be reserved for very low-income residents.

While the Berkeley City Council approved the project several months ago, the groundbreaking date was delayed due to opposition from activists who wanted the theater building, which was built in 1961, to be preserved.

However, the Berkeley Landmarks Preservation Committee recently voted in favor of the project, setting the stage for development. According to the developer, the apartments will be ready in July 2004.
