3/12/03: The unemployment rate jumped from 5.7% in January to 5.9% in February, according to the US Labor Department. This is due to an additional 138,777 jobs cut from payrolls in the last month. The main question during this type of bloodletting is whether these cuts are being made for restructuring purposes with a view to the future or as a panic reaction to the current economic crisis with no thought to downstream repercussions. The labor market is unstable at best. And whenever there is uncertainty--and there is so much uncertainty regarding the economy--it's the human equation that always takes the brunt of cost cutting. At some point, the brakes need to be put on these layoffs or there will be no infrastructure left to conduct business when the economy does recover. In other words, as the economy does recover, which it will do, the short-term benefits of layoffs will most likely be outweighed by long-term needs for top-level talent. Don't get caught short.
