Located on a 15-acre parcel across from the King St. metro station, the state-of-the-art compound will consist of five conjoined office buildings set out in a "U" formation. A tower, surrounded by the other four structures, will serve as the facility's centerpiece. There will also be two parking structures capable of accommodating a total of 3,500 vehicles. "We're working closely with PTO to carefully plan and build out the campus's interiors and amenities," Hard adds. "This will be a world-class facility commensurate with PTO's national role promoting industrial and technological progress, particularly with regard to intellectual property."

The US General Services Administration, the government's real estate arm, won approval from the US Congress to sign off on a 20-year, multi-million dollar pre-lease of the entire campus in 1995. The deal marked the largest lease commitment ever completed for government use. Development of the compound will allow the PTO to consolidate its 7,000 employees, currently dispersed among 18 buildings throughout the area, under one roof.
