Issues over permits and the lack of an approval from the Historic Preservation Commission on the new design have hindered construction of the 12,000-sf addition. The expansion would give the museum more than twice the space it currently has in its 9,000-sf structure.

Located at 84 Franklin St. here, at the center of this historic capital city, the state-operated museum was formerly a church and is designed in a Gothic architectural style. Despite the official go-ahead, the parties leading opposition to the project plan to appeal the decision.
