CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA-All is not rosy in the Equity REIT business, but analysts find that the real estate sector is doing better than other industries. SNL Financial LC has reported that equity REITs made a better showing than the S&P 500 in the first quarter of 2003, with the former showing a return increase of 1.2% and the latter showing a return decline of 3.2%. For the REIT industry, the new standing marks a 0.7% decline from the previous quarter.

SNL has concluded that retail REITs are responsible for the sector’s superior numbers. With a 7.7% increase, retail REITs led the group, while hotel REITs pulled up the rear with an 18.3% decline.
