The new development sits on a historic site that was home to the municipal incinerator between 1932 and 1971. Located off the C&O canal, Ritz-Carlton Georgetown is at 3100 South St. in close proximity to the restaurants, shops and other popular spots in the Georgetown area. In addition to the 86 hotel rooms and 28 condominium residences, there is also a 3,000-seat, 144-screen multiplex theater, and 13,000 sf of retail.

A Millennium spokesperson tells GlobeSt.com that the hit the hospitality industry took as a result of the Sept. 11, terror attacks did not dissuade the developer from moving forward with the project, even though another Ritz-Carlton was already in place just down the street. "We have a totally distinct and separate audience for each of the two hotels," he says. "The first offers 300 rooms, nearly 13,000 sf of ballroom space, and about 30,000 sf of additional meeting space. The Georgetown hotel has just 86 rooms and a small meeting space. It is more of a boutique hotel." As for the residences, the properties offer condominiums ranging from 1,100 sf to 6,000 sf.
