Once the carriage trade retail venue in Center City, surrounded by upscaleclothiers, this Chestnut St. stretch suffered high vacancies for nearly adecade. With the opening of a Borders store last summer at 13th andChestnut, it is undergoing a renaissance of retailers that serve a less rarifieddemographic.

The 19-story, French Regency-style building, also called One South PennSquare, was designed by famed Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer andcompleted in 1914. The Caldwell space is entered through an atrium andfeatures 20-foot ceilings. The current owner is locally based KeystoneRealty Services.

Caldwell, meanwhile, is now owned by Greensboro, NC-based Carlyle & Co.,which owns several jewelry store brands. Six suburban Caldwell stores arenot affected by the Center City closing.
